DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) - P0601 ENGINE CONTROL MODULE CHECKSUM ERROR

Know your Circuit

  • The nerve center of the fuel injection system is the engine control module (ECM)
  • The ECM constantly supervises the information from various sensors, and regulates the systems that start after vehicle performance.
  • The ECM is also empowered to control all the diagnostic functions of the system.
  • It can detect operational flaws and caution the driver through the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
  • It also records and stores a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) which detects the likely problem- making parts to help the technician while repairing.
  • In order to house the program information and the calibrations required for engine, trans-axle diagnostics operation an electrically erasable programmable read only memory (EEPROM) is used.
  • For detecting errors in the software the ECM uses a specially devised value known as the checksum.
  • The checksum (self explanatory) is a value that is the sum total of all the numbers in the software added together.
  • If the values recorded by the ECM and the checksum do not match then a checksum error is highlighted.

Pre-requisites for setting the DTC

DTC is set when:

·         The ECM detects more than 3 incorrect checksum successively.

 

 

What happens when DTC sets?

When will  MIL/ DTC clear?

1) The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) will not glow.

1) A history DTC will automatically clear after 40 repetitive warm-up cycles without any fault.

 

2) The ECM will store conditions present when the DTC was set as Failure Records data only

2) DTC(s) can be cleared by using the scan tool.

 

3) This information will not be stored in the Freeze Frame data

Change the ECM.

Is the change made?

  1. Using the scan tool, clear the DTCs.
  2. Start the engine and idle at normal operating temperature.
  3. Run the vehicle within the conditions specified for setting this DTC .

Does the scan tool say that this diagnostic has been run and passed?

IF YES

THEN

 Follow Step 2

See  if any additional DTCs are set.

Are there any undiagnosed DTCs shown?

IF YES

 THEN

 Go to applicable DTC table
