Intake Valve Timing (IVT) Control Solenoid Valve

 

Procedure for diagnosis

 

Function check

Start and bring engine temperature to normal operating level.

Switch off ignition wait for 10 seconds and switch on again.

Between ECM terminal 62 and ground, set the tester probe.

Start and idle engine.

At idle the battery voltage should show 11V to 14V

While revving up to 2000 rpm voltage is approx 4V – battery voltage 11 – 14V

OK: end of inspection                 NG: proceed to the next step.

 

Power supply circuit to the IVT control solenoid valve

Switch off ignition.

Disconnect the harness connector to the IVT control solenoid valve.

Switch on ignition.

Between the valve terminal 1 and ground, check voltage (battery).

OK: skip the next step.               NG: proceed to find the malfunction.

 

Find the malfunction, check:

Harness connectors – E50, F1and E14 (IPDM E/R)       

For open/short in harness between IPDM E/R and IVT control solenoid valve.

Repair open/short to ground/power in harness/connectors.

 

Output signal circuit for open/short in IVT control solenoid valve

Switch off ignition.

Disconnect the harness connector to the ECM.

Between ECM terminal 62 & IVT control solenoid valve terminal 2,

check harness continuity. There should be continuity.

For short to ground and power, check harness.

OK: proceed to the next step.     NG: repair open/short to ground/power in harness/connectors.

 

The component: IVT control solenoid valve

Inspect the component.

OK: proceed to the next step.     NG: replace the component.

 

Crankshaft position sensor (POS)

Inspect the component.

OK: proceed to the next step.     NG: replace the component.

 

Camshaft position sensor (PHASE)

Inspect the component.

OK: proceed to the next step.     NG: replace the component.

 

Camshaft (intake) check:

Look for any dirt or chipping/damage on the signal plate of the component back end.

OK: proceed to the next step.     NG: clean signal plate / replace component.

 

Intermittent incident

 

Inspection of component: IVT control solenoid valve

Disconnect the harness connector to the valve.

Between the valve terminal 1 & 2, check resistance

Terminals - 1 & 2                          Resistance – approx 7.2W at 20°C or 68°F

               - 1 / 2 & ground                      8 W    continuity should not exist.       

 

 

Remember when measuring input output voltage,

the ECM ground terminals are not to be used
