About 9 months ago, I sold a 2010 Navara D40 2.5DCi 190bhp. Nice truck but it has always smoked a little from cold start.

However it is now getting worse an worse. Basically from cold start, it takes approximately 5 seconds to fire and then misses for a few seconds ( up to 30 ). While it is missing, there are plumes of white/blue smoke with what i think is a fuel smell but we are having a debate in the workshop as to whether it is fuel or oil. If you rev the truck the smoke stops quite quickly. After this initial period, the vehicle is absolutely perfect. No smoking when driving, no hiccups, the truck goes absolutely brilliantly.

Before the customer brought it back to us, he replaced the glow plugs and the glow plug relay. The fault does very much seem like a glow plug issue or a leaking injector. There are no fault codes.

It is not under warranty anymore but that is not the point , I would like to just put it right for him.

So when it came in , we checked the glow plugs were getting a feed which they are and that they are powering up. We tried bypassing the egr cooler on this vehicle making sure it wasnt coolant leaking into the engine.The fuel filter was an inferior item which was leaking so a quality fuel filter was replaced. After priming the new filter, it was the best it has started but has since gone back to how it was before. We took the injectors out and sent them for testing at a reputable diesel specialists who confirmed they were all fine. At this point i replaced the scv as these are quite cheap but this made no difference at all.

I buy a lot of Nissans to sell and have an excellent relationship with my local Nissan franchise. They offered to take a look. I told them nothing about what I had done and told them to start afresh. They checked glow plugs ( choice of 2 differing plugs on this model ), relay, turbo seals for leaking, egr, timing chain ( was their initial thought ) before deciding that they felt it seemed like an injector issue. They use a different diesel company to me so i gave them permission. He found a sticking solenoid on one of the injectors but said the others were all fine. This was fixed but when it came to restart it was exactly the same.

Nissan checked some other things and decided that the best course of action would be to remove the head and replace the valve stem oil seals. They had a couple of them that had done this before but with higher mileage than mine (80,000 miles. ). They said did they want us to to do them or them.
I elected to do it in our workshop, replaced headgaskets, valve stem oil seals, etc with quality blueprint ones but as you can guess, it is stil exactly the same.

It starts exactly like a Mondeo TDci 130 with leaking injectors. Has anybody ever came across any similar issues with these before or similar.

I have put a link to a youtube video I have taken of the truck today but it started probably the best it has done. The colder the temperature, the worse it seems to run.

Live data on hot and cold engine for comparison?

How about a relative compression test for starters.

I should have asked for a report but i have dealt with the chap for 15 years and never been wrong before in dealings with me.

My fault for a schoolboy error but Nissan main dealer sent the injectors to who they use and he came back with the same findings.

Nissan tested the compression and confirmed "within tolerances".

However I should have written that before i did the valve stem oil seals, I did a compression test and although i dont have the results to hand, i was happy with the compression and was even across all four cylinders.

1) Glow plugs would be my first port of call- yes I know its a CR and shouldn't need them beyond freezing temps but even so..

2) Oil in a pot would not cause the delayed start, and the blue smoke would clear almost immediately, which it doesn't..

3) It sounds by ear to have even compression, but a relative compression test via clamp meter or even a test gauge when *cold*. Tight valve clearance or sticking valve on one pot? That would fit the symptoms nicely...

4) Cranking speed is ok. don't waste your time there.

5) blank the EGR valve to be sure.

6) bent rod, even just a tiny bit- did you notice anything when the head was off? Do 3) and look at the time period between peak compressions.

Hi. I also have a 2010 Nissan Navara D40 188BHP with exactly the same symptoms on a cold start up as you have. Have done countless exercises to resolve the issue with no luck. Did you ever find the fault with your one?

The upper timing chain on these are very prone to wear (stretch) which drives the top 2 cam sprockets plus your injection pump. Think about it and get it checked out
