One day the van refused to start. So up to now i have replaced new fuel pump, new fuel filter housing, all new spill pipes with metal t pieces, the head gasket was found to have gone between two of the cylinders so i have put a second hand head on from a 2.0 dti. When the van does run its goes like a dream but it simply will not start if left for 8 or so hours, if any thing it has started slighty better parked on my drive (facing downhill) with the glow plug light coming on briefly but still takes 15 seconds to fire with plumes of grey smoke from exhaust. Does anybody know if the dti and di camshafts are different because my mechanic has just checked engine compression which is ok and seems to think that the camshaft maybe causing the non cold start. When engine is warm its starts on the button first turn of the key, but obviously not when left.

The only other thing i can think of is there is a little swirl pot in the fuel tank which has a spring mechanism on the side of it which when i cleaned out the tank and fuel lines didnt seem to be doing much? could this be causing any fuel draining problems? sorry for ranting on but my vans been off the road for four months now and ive gone to far to give up with it now, if anybody has any experience with these engines id be so gratefull, thanks matt.

Update on my van, will start In the morning if left on my drive facing nose down and sometimes it will start on the flat, if engine up then it doesn't wanna know. I have since added a one way valve to the fuel feed line just before the filter housing and by clamping the return fuel line it will start from cold or if left for 8+ hours, I know there is air getting into the fuel system somewhere it's just finding it, does anybody know any specialist I could take my van to around the Malvern, worcestershire area? I really am starting to think it's unfixable!

Thanks matt

Matt

Give ME £2000 and i WILL fix it ;) Promise

Kev

Kev,
Agreed it may not be compression, but hot [compressed] air looks like a good start:D
Matt,
The reason i'm pointing out the fts is because i went to an Astra 2.0D non starter [can't remember whether turbo or year], and this was the fts, but it was located on top of the pump.
I'm going to have a word with Stella.
Tony:)

I think i'll just give kev the van to fix:D its got a habbit of making everybody unhappy who even glances at it, i seriously am getting close to driving it in the river, hang on it wont even start!:w00t:

RE: vauxhall astra 2.0 di nightmare non start! please help

Tony

It might not be compressions BUT as i state here and else-where OK is meaning-less. I would have expected for this to be sorted if the pump has been overhauled by professionals.
This further stresses the point of Kev requesting the comp figures. Don't feel embarressed by asking. At the end of the day your paying for it.
You really need to post them so we can potentially help further, you don't want to make Kev angry:w00t:
Tony

Matt
I would give the customer the compression figure,s ;) so he would not have to ask for them.

Kev.
ps it,s been to too many garages :w00t: do you know john 61

Well he did the test with the guy who rebuilt my fuel pump from malvern diesel services he is a bosch agent, so when he tells me that compression is ok i would feel a bit cheeky asking him for exact figures, i understand compression is obviously higher for diesels than petrol engines but if test results were within tolerances then all ok.

The van goes to well to have compression issues it flies along and burns no oil whatsoever but then again i am no mechanic so would happily be corrected:D

i havnt spent £2000 with the current mechanic about 4 separate people have had the van to date but he has done seals put on new head with gaskets etc for a good price

I know its something simple its just tracking down the fault

Matt

ARE YOU LISTENING. OK means nothing :w00t: post the compression figure,s ;) You have spent £2000 and you OK mechanic still has not sorted it :w00t::w00t::w00t:

Facts and Figures or deleted post beckon,s.

Kev.

Really appreciate the replies guys,

i sort of took the pump apart when it first broke down stupidly thinking i could fix it myself! But it looked like the bosch pump only consisted of the main pressurising piston and the pump position sensor which is connected to the underneath of the ecu on the pump, where would the fuel temp sensor fit? and when i had the full rebuild and overhaul done on the pump at a cost of £650 shouldn' t of this been replaced!?

I have every faith in my mechanic doing the injector seals properly and he has vacuum tested them also, also the compression was checked last week which was all ok

Still havn' t got the van back and ive spent over £2000 grand, theres nothing expensive left to change, im sure its little air leak somewhere or a fuel cap filler problem?

does anybody know what the little spring valve is for which is located in the fuel tank swirlpot next to the gauze pick up? i took it all out to clean thinking there could be a blockage

regards matt

As Martin suggested on the first reply; are injector seals sealing. I know you've said they are new, but can easily get damaged while fitting and the injectors must be tightened correctly.

A vacuum test on the leak off system would be my first shot.

Matt

Compressions OK :w00t: That is meaning - less, unless we know them or the guy who,s says they are OK knows what they should be.

OK is not a fact or a figure ;)

Kev.

Sorry to confuse Matt,
I meant fts [fuel temp sensor], and it's located in the the fuel pump. I've no test values as i've already said.
I can't help with the changes you've done to the engine as i've not worked on anything with these changes done.
You may have to get your mechanic to start asking questions locally to see if you can get some checks/values done on the fts.
Tony

forgot to say it was going into limp mode and throwing up codes but this was solved with new head and gasket etc, no codes now show in 200 miles of driving

Hi tony,

yes engine code is x20 dtl low pressure but i now have a head on this bottom end from a vauxhall vectra 2.0 which is engine code x20 dth high pressure. I was pretty sure that internally these engines are the same with just different fuel pump, intake system and intercooler etc. The van pulls very well and starts perfect when engine is warm.

I wasnt aware that there was a tempreture sender on the fuel pump, is this what controls the glow plug light coming on? also what is an ftp? and where do i check for + and - values, thanks.

Also i dont suppose u would know if the camshaft i have now in the engine being from the x20 dth would cause any cold start problems because of possible different timing and lifts etc as this is what my mechanic wants to try today which could be costly. if it was cam problem wouldnt engine struggle to start even when warm?

also is there a problem with the fuel filler caps on these failing and causing a vacuum in the tank?

thanks matt.

Matt,
I assume it's the x20dtl engine code, please confirm?
Have you had a code read from a good diagnostic machine and pulled any codes?
I think you have a temp related problem here, and would suspect the fuel temp sensor located on the pump.
Get a code read done 1st, see if anything comes up rather then risk just changing the above on the word of a chancer:D
If you get nothing from a code read, check out the ftp as above, i haven't any +/- resistance values for this, but someone else may have.
Tony;)

sorry forgot to say, injector seals have been done, ive done so much to this car now im forgetting, an empty bank balance is a good reminder though!;)

are the injector seals ok have they been tested?

martin
