I had heard various opinions regarding the possibility, and most claimed it couldn't be done. The only way to be certain would be to try it myself, with a "lot" of help from our hosts. The outcome is that it is possible, and we now have a very happy customer. The complete operation required 3 incodes, and, being the first time this had be tried, a few hours of time (about 3-hours).

I am certain that this can be done in about a hour, now that we know how to do it.

Big thanks, lads.

Working in this weather

I was just wondering how you mobile service guys work in this weather we are having at the moment, it`s raining or snowing. its bad having to service and MOT cars inside when they come in dripping with water and snow down your neck , let alone outside plus you have the cold to contend with and the brain going numb

Can Bus Wiring Repairs

When repairing can bus wiring what is the recommended method for repair if there is one ?

Or should the damaged section of loom be replaced ?

Done a couple using heat shink connectors and been ok so far !

Smart Car Roadster SAM unit

Hi, does anyone know of any companies in the UK that repair Smart Roadster SAM units after water ingress?
Thanks
HA

Some people idea of free motoring

Hi All

Just speaking to a friend of my, who works as a mechanic at a Volvo Dealership in the North West.

Tells me this tale of a Customer comes in with his car on the back of a car transporter, broken down, non start with his Volvo S40 two litre Diesel. gets the car off the transporter and tries to start the car, its completely dead, checks the battery got a faulty cell, so replaces it, car still dead, checks the car out and the fusable link on the battery main lead, as it has blown, orders a new lead, fits it car starts up, tests the car all ok, but cant find a reason why the fuse has blown in the first place. Customer comes and collects the car, couple of hours later customer phones up and says the car wont start again.

Car comes back to the garage, car gets checked out, again the Fusable link blown again, new one ordered car tested for a long test drive and after some time when the engine gets hot, start the car, the starter motor seems to be bit noiser, to be on the safe side orders a new one.

now this car is coming up for 12 months old, only covered 2500 miles but the fronts are worn out, it is also own by a "Traveler"

the new start motor is fitted, the new fusable link fitted car starting and running fine. My mate takes the car out for test drive with the customer for a long test drive, the conversation in the car from the customer was" how long will it take before Volvo have to give me back the money for my car, well that sort of thing"

On the test drive car drive fine, gets back to the garage all well car running fine.

Ten minutes later customer comes back into the garage again the car wont start the fusible link blown again!

Only ever seems to blow when no one else is around, the customer starting his car, It turns out some customer who may be or may be not Travellers, are put the hand brake on, turning the steering wheel so the front wheels are into the kerb and try to start the car over and over again until the starter motor is over loaded and blows the fuse. This is done so Volvo, or any other car maker has to buy back the vehicle, Free Motoring, very under handed, the guy has been told to take it to another garage ( banned from the garage,) told to take it back from where he purcased it from.

Jaguar xJ6 Coolant Bypass

Hi

1992 Jag XJ6 - 3.2L

Has anyone fitted an oil cooler bypass to one of these?
Just wondering whats involved?

Thanks

Mondeo diesel turbo fault

I'm adding this topic to assist others.
Got called to this motor and was asked to change the turbo, because that is what the garage told them it needed. I tend to be sceptical when someone else has diagnosed a vehicle, and so I insisted on testing the system for myself. The car started and cut out immediately; the customer pointed out that the actuator arm pulled open on start up, and that's when it cut out. This didn't seem to me to be a turbo fault, even though they tend to be problematic, so out came the IDS and full scan. There were codes for the turbo, but the customer had been removing the electric plug to the motor, so this was expected. 2 other codes were also logged P0404 and P0409. On checking the plug to the EGR It was found to be disconnected, so I secured it and erased the codes. the same fault occured, and a rescan revealed only P0404, which relates to the position of the EGR. A quick clean and popping the valve back into place cleared the fault, and the car runs a treat. without the turbo actuator arm opening full on start up. Customer seemed a little disappointed that it wasn't the turbo, which I found surprising, until he told me he'd already been and bought a new one

Hydraulic common rail diesel injector removal tool

Morning,

We have had a run of common rail diesel problems recently, and have really struggled to remove the injectors with-out damaging them,or the head or both

Is there an "all makes" tool available that works

Regards

Darcy

Mechanex show Exeter

Hi All any one going to the show???

Mad-Eric

ILexa Registration

All,
I decided to bite the bullet and register on Ilexa, but everytime i try it says 'an error has occurred, and registration is currently disabled'. My other half is not on the invite and there is no "plus one", she would be devastated if I went on my own but I am not sure I should ask if I can bring a guest (I went to a wedding on my own last year and she cried all day, irritatingly the bride said "I have been meaning to call you all week and tell you to bring your girlfriend) ....they have never met her but she is my long term partner and will be my wife eventually.

My options are:

1. Go on my own.
2. Don't go at all.
3. Do you find yourselves changing more spare wheels than a pit crew?

Is it challenging on a daily basis? because that's what I'm after (not the spare tyre bit).

Any advice out there would be appreciated, as obviously their website says it's a great place to work! but a bit of a one sided view I'd say.

Thanks in advance chaps.

Christmas

IT HAS BEEN DECREED.
THAT YOU ALL TO HAVE A VERY VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS MAY YOUR PROBLEMS BE FEW AND YOUR BUSINESS PROFITABLE IN THE NEW YEAR .

What Breaker / Part Finder Service ?

Hi Guys, and seasons greetings to you all !

Had a miss-hap today in the ice, and now have an urgent need for an Astra G front bumper in star silver

Nothing painted available on the bay, so thought about a part finder service. The point is I have it home with me to put a few miles on it before the customer get it back and I don't want to return it!! I have put 30 miles on it earlier and I love it.

If anyone is interested in the repair, Autodata says 8.2hrs for a HG change, and the job is easily do-able in that time, only trouble I had was sourcing new rockers, Alfa will only sell you them with new hydraulic tappets (£25 EACH), local engineering shop got them for me thankfully.

Back to the Laguna tomorrow then , si

A3 Mechatronic unit

Hi

Does any one know of anyone who can repair mechatronic units, Just changed one & seems a shame to throw old one in the bin.

Handheld Oscilloscopes

Hi all, I'm looking for a handheld oscilloscope for quick checks on the presence of signals etc without having to set up a computer etc, I thought I'd ask here if there's a particular make/model thats ideal for this, or if they're mostly an inaccurate and sketchy diagnostic tool altogether?

I realise a Pico is a must for real 'in-depth' diagnostics, but ideally I want something that will check sensors and signals adaquetley enough for an initial diagnosis, whilst being practical and under 500 quid.

Any recommendations out there?

Cheers, Tony.

Diagnostics

Had an offer come in the post today from V-Tech UK to part exchange my ACR for their Multiscan P1, £1995 incl.

Anyone else got this piece of kit and might it be a good deal??

Ted.

The mystery of Pierburg carbs

Hi All, Being brought up on a diet of SU carbs, the pierburg was a complete mystery to me.
