If the steering lock does not release you have a DAS - Drive Authorisation / Immobiliser Issue. The first thing to do is try a Spare Key.

Some times Merc keys need to be left in the Ignition for up to 120 mins. There is no coding process, they are factory coded.

Being a W204 I have found that Mileage Correction Boys actually solder a CAN manipulation PCB in the EIS - Ignition Switch. Because they have not Cracked how to change the mileage in the Ignition Switch they add this PCB known as a CAN Blocker to stop the Ignition updating the Cluster - which they can manipulate.  I have come across dozens of these Can Blockers causing symptoms like yours.

Mercedes Benz Dealers are now aware of this, but only in the last two weeks!!! Yet it has been going on since 2006 when they launched the new W221 S Class. Now the problem has followed ont all their models including the new E and C as yours.

You really need to get your hands on a STAR Machine. Unless it is a fuse or something simple.

BTW - the fuse box in the car is at the end of the dash, to the side of the clocks where the door shuts onto it, there may well be a box at both ends.

If you are able to borrow a STAR Machine, try and get your friend with it. It is a superb bit of kit and not easy to use at first, in fact it can be confusing.

The Star not only reads faults and Live data, it has wiring Diagrams, is a complete Workshop Manual and has Guided Diagnostics. You should be able to read the EIS on those cars  with any machine without ignition as the unit is always Live.

Good luck, I imagine that will be a good easy job or a nightmare - nothing inbetween with those faults

Be sure to Physically look for the Can Blocker, that is a very likely "Known" cause

Another classic mileage correction issue. Front SAM incorporates the CGW in it as a virtual ecu.

The car is at a dealer, the best place for it, would it be so bad for you to believe them?
