hi every one got a bit of a strange one here with a golf 1.6 fsi 2008 60k got the car with a failed gear box removed the gear box, clutch looked as if it had just been replaced so fitted 2nd hand low mileage gear box to find all forward gears hard to select but only when started and reverse you cant get at all it just grinds,so tried bleeding no joy just the same tried a new slave cylinder and a new clutch master cylinder no joy still the same I've now fitted a new clutch kit thinking it must be a problem with the springs on pressure plate but no still exactly the same.i cant think what else this could be its seems as if the clutch is not fully engaging. its only the solid fly wheel and fork that hasn't been replaced.your thoughts on this will be much appreciated

Which gearbox code came out and which went in?

Vile Invention

Dark was that day when Diesel conceived his grim engine that begot you, vile invention, more vicious, more criminal than the camera even, metallic monstrosity, bale and bane of our culture, chief woe of our Commonweal. How dare the Law prohibit hashish and heroin yet license your use, who inflate all weak inferior egos? Their addicts only do harm to their own lives: you poison the lungs of the innocent, your din dithers the peaceful, and on choked roads hundreds must daily die by chance-medley. Nimble technicians, surely you should hang your heads in shame. Your wit works mighty wonders, has landed men on the Moon, replaced brains by computers, and can smithy a "smart" bomb. It is a crying scandal that you cannot take the time or be bothered to build us, what sanity knows we need, an odorless and noiseless staid little electric brougham.

Just some thoughts.

Sounds like the clutch is dragging slightly. That's usually the centre plate not sliding freely on the spline or running slightly out of axial alignment.

What had failed in the original box?

Was the clutch first changed because of this fault, or for another reason?

When it was apart for that clutch change; was something done that could cause the box to fail to remount square? (Dowel misplaced; obstruction left in; etc.)
