I have a 97 fiesta 1.3 LX. Its been experiencing loss of power and stuttering so I called a mobile tuner who found the exhaust blocked. I took it to Kwikfit on his advice and had a new exhausr fitted. This has had no effect but I heard from smeone else that the CAT tube may be blocked, should I have this replaced, call the mobile mechanic back or what. Advice greatly appreciated I dont want to spend another 200 without good reason. PKS

Hi Phil.
Yes, oil leaking into the cylinders would be quite serious and would damage the CAT, but are there any real symptoms that support the idea that oil is being burnt eg. blue smoke from exhaust or high oil consumption.
I agree with the previous post, that the exhaust should be disconnected to see if the fault still exists, if you and the neighbours can stand the noise!!
If the fault still exists then you won’t have to waste money on a new CAT.
You could then make sure the engine basics are correct eg. check compression, plugs and leads, check for air leaks etc.
If these things check OK then I think a proper diagnostic check may be the way forward.

Thanks for the info guys, the car is not using oil or water but I thought it had been using more petrol leading up to the fault manifesting itself. What might this mean ?

Hiya,
I thought all fiestaa were like that? hahaha
What part of the exhaust did you replace, If the cat is blocked then it will reduce power greatly, But why is the cat blocked?
Has your car been running rich or leaking oil into the cylinder? It would be a couple of hundred pounds for a catalytic converter, but I would get bulletproof evidence that it was that before you replace it as you said, the exhaust didnt fix it.
If you can get on a ramp disconnect the exhaust before the cat and see if it runs better and with power, if it is ok then do the same at the back of the cat, if the fault returns then you know where the problem lies!!
Hope this helps!
Cheers

THe mobile engineer told me that the exhaust was most likely blocked with debris from decayed baffles in the muffler, this debris eventually blocking up the exhaust and moving back up the pipe towards the cat. He didnt check the tuning of the car. Leaking oil into the cylinder sounds,  serious is it ? ???

Hi Ricky,

The mobile mechanic came back and tested the emmissions, this time (after the replacement of the exhaust) they came back well within limits so the cat was fine. This didnt explain why the engine was still underpowered and backfiring. He went to change the plugs and ceramic of the first one disintegrated in the plugspanner !. We changed all the plugs and went for a spin the car was like new. So one new exhaust and a set of plugs later, the cars great. Thanks to everyone for their interest and advice. I am going to sell it before it goes wrong again though !!! ;D
