54 freelander TD4 running problems

Good morning, '54 plate freelander TD4, not the best starter,next to zero turbo boost (rev nuts off it to get anywhere)smoky on initial start up (fuel smoke) customer to date has fitted; MAF,boost solenoid,rail pressure sensor all genuine parts and to no avail,injectors tested also,was wondering if anyone had any technical info to check against,pressure values,readings etc to check against,obviously a belt and braces approach is requiredso any help required. cheers.

Don't believe a word of that - Check it all out for yourself !!! Your customer or his previous garage has no useful knowledge of that engine, it follows that they do not have the knowledge to test, remove or replace the parts mentioned. Otherwise the car would be fixed. You need to double check all that.

Do you have any fault codes?

Would be a good idea to mention which diagnostic tool you are using and post a complete log of the live data you have.

First thing would be to check engine has good compression and is capable of breathing and exhausting air.

How did the fault occur? Been paddling, has it?

Checked the primary fuel pressure?
All the parts stated have been fitted,30psi at delivery pump in rear wheel arch,all OE parts-Bosch,nice and smooth idle just fluffy on start up from cold, vac tested VNT actuator -fine.Its a CAT C car (hailstone damage)im using omitec/solus ultra no fault codes.My instints say fuel pressure problem,but need some rail pressure figures to check against,interestingly while vaccing the VNT and driving no boost problems it flies (but obviously im now overboosting)but the starting issue still remains,im no fan of this engine in LR guise either!

Do a compression test followed by injector leakback test and post the results of both along with the rail pressure and duty cycle of the DRV during cranking and idle.

PS. add the cranking speed and battery voltage whilst cranking.

Try the rail sensor harness overlay kit, I had these problems on one and it sorted it.

hi mark,done the leakback test its nice and peaceful within tolorance,compression ok no misfires nothing,its just not an instant starter like most Di's are,its on the back burner at the moment but would appreciate any pointers,next time im on it i will furnish you with above readings-thanks
