Here is one I've had in this/last week that has had me work hard.

It is fixed but I thought I'd shar Ethel experience and also thank rasher for his advice.

Anyway it came in for a timing chain as diagnosed by VW dealer.

Chain was slightly stretched nothing too bad but a P0016 fault.

Anyway.

New chain and still same code.

Proved timing spot on based on coloured links and Mark's on cams which ALSO line up with corresponding on head.

DTI gauge to prove TDC on cyl 1.

Oil pressure checked. Camshaft valves checked. Everything okay. Live data said phase position out by 16 degrees. Scope confirmed.

Checked and checked and checked. Cam pulley felt loose on on the Intake pulley as if springs not strong inside.

Eventually after ruling out everything I committed to buying a camshaft.

Anyway the fault was the cam sensor wheel was slightly out.

How this happened I do not know. I put the old cam in a vice and could not move the wheel with a pair of waterpump pliers.

The VVT pulley is much stronger on the new cam.

My question I suppose is, could the camshaft have been manufactured wrong and then the VVT compensated til it gave up at 30k miles?

Engine is quieter with new cam too!

Really had me struggling and I must admit I never proved the cam wheel was out before deciding to replace cam but I had proved everything else so knew the camshaft must have been the fault.

Odd but interesting

Vile Invention

Dark was that day when Diesel conceived his grim engine that begot you, vile invention, more vicious, more criminal than the camera even, metallic monstrosity, bale and bane of our culture, chief woe of our Commonweal. How dare the Law prohibit hashish and heroin yet license your use, who inflate all weak inferior egos? Their addicts only do harm to their own lives: you poison the lungs of the innocent, your din dithers the peaceful, and on choked roads hundreds must daily die by chance-medley. Nimble technicians, surely you should hang your heads in shame. Your wit works mighty wonders, has landed men on the Moon, replaced brains by computers, and can smithy a "smart" bomb. It is a crying scandal that you cannot take the time or be bothered to build us, what sanity knows we need, an odorless and noiseless staid little electric brougham.
