| Hi all,
Im having an ongoing saga with my van which is a 2000 astra 2.0 di. One day the van refused to start. So up to now i have replaced new fuel pump, new fuel filter housing, all new spill pipes with metal t pieces, the head gasket was found to have gone between two of the cylinders so i have put a second hand head on from a 2.0 dti. When the van does run its goes like a dream but it simply will not start if left for 8 or so hours, if any thing it has started slighty better parked on my drive (facing downhill) with the glow plug light coming on briefly but still takes 15 seconds to fire with plumes of grey smoke from exhaust. Does anybody know if the dti and di camshafts are different because my mechanic has just checked engine compression which is ok and seems to think that the camshaft maybe causing the non cold start. When engine is warm its starts on the button first turn of the key, but obviously not when left.
The only other thing i can think of is there is a little swirl pot in the fuel tank which has a spring mechanism on the side of it which when i cleaned out the tank and fuel lines didnt seem to be doing much? could this be causing any fuel draining problems? sorry for ranting on but my vans been off the road for four months now and ive gone to far to give up with it now, if anybody has any experience with these engines id be so gratefull, thanks matt. |

| Matt,
I assume it's the x20dtl engine code, please confirm?
Have you had a code read from a good diagnostic machine and pulled any codes?
I think you have a temp related problem here, and would suspect the fuel temp sensor located on the pump.
Get a code read done 1st, see if anything comes up rather then risk just changing the above on the word of a chancer
If you get nothing from a code read, check out the ftp as above, i haven't any +/- resistance values for this, but someone else may have.

| Hi tony,
yes engine code is x20 dtl low pressure but i now have a head on this bottom end from a vauxhall vectra 2.0 which is engine code x20 dth high pressure. I was pretty sure that internally these engines are the same with just different fuel pump, intake system and intercooler etc. The van pulls very well and starts perfect when engine is warm.
I wasnt aware that there was a tempreture sender on the fuel pump, is this what controls the glow plug light coming on? also what is an ftp? and where do i check for + and - values, thanks.
Also i dont suppose u would know if the camshaft i have now in the engine being from the x20 dth would cause any cold start problems because of possible different timing and lifts etc as this is what my mechanic wants to try today which could be costly. if it was cam problem wouldnt engine struggle to start even when warm?
also is there a problem with the fuel filler caps on these failing and causing a vacuum in the tank?
thanks matt. |

| forgot to say it was going into limp mode and throwing up codes but this was solved with new head and gasket etc, no codes now show in 200 miles of driving

| Sorry to confuse Matt,
I meant fts [fuel temp sensor], and it's located in the the fuel pump. I've no test values as i've already said.
I can't help with the changes you've done to the engine as i've not worked on anything with these changes done.
You may have to get your mechanic to start asking questions locally to see if you can get some checks/values done on the fts.

| | Matt Compressions OK That is meaning - less, unless we know them or the guy who,s says they are OK knows what they should be. OK is not a fact or a figure Kev.

| | As Martin suggested on the first reply; are injector seals sealing. I know you've said they are new, but can easily get damaged while fitting and the injectors must be tightened correctly. A vacuum test on the leak off system would be my first shot.
I could give up Stella, but I'm no quitter. |

| Really appreciate the replies guys,
i sort of took the pump apart when it first broke down stupidly thinking i could fix it myself! But it looked like the bosch pump only consisted of the main pressurising piston and the pump position sensor which is connected to the underneath of the ecu on the pump, where would the fuel temp sensor fit? and when i had the full rebuild and overhaul done on the pump at a cost of £650 shouldn' t of this been replaced!?
I have every faith in my mechanic doing the injector seals properly and he has vacuum tested them also, also the compression was checked last week which was all ok
Still havn' t got the van back and ive spent over £2000 grand, theres nothing expensive left to change, im sure its little air leak somewhere or a fuel cap filler problem?
does anybody know what the little spring valve is for which is located in the fuel tank swirlpot next to the gauze pick up? i took it all out to clean thinking there could be a blockage
regards matt
