Got a TD5 in for Mot repairs (Both front to rear brake pipes)

Fitted pipes bleed the brakes manually then as per the Autodiagnos tester ie modulator bleed then power bleed.

problem is the brake pedal goes nearly to the floor on first pump and with another 2 pumps its perfect.

If you pump it up and hold pressure on it the pedal sinks away.

Tried a new master cyl but the problem is still the same !

Suspect the abs unit is the problem but would just like to see if anyone has come across this problem and found a solution

P.S there are no fault codes stored.

Thank you

As it,s a Diesel as long as the pedal still has some reserve travel (ie it does not touch the floor on the first pump of the pedal) it,s a MOT pass. Many modern diesels will have pedal sink if the engine is running (VOSA are aware of this, but have yet to announce a special notice).

But yours sounds as if you still have air in the system .

Might seem a daft thing to ask, but can I assume you've actually driven the car on the road?

Alot of diesel brakes feel absolutley useless when sitting in the car on a ramp or stationary, but fine when driven.

Hi

We have tried driving it and the brakes are still really poor.

At times it feels like there is also no servo assistance, As the pedal goes very hard

hi

have you tried clamping each flex in turn to see if you can narrow it down ? I take it you have bleed the front also?

After that you may have to blank off pipes / joints before and after modulator to narrow down your problem.

Believe it or not, I once had a LDV from another workshop ( OK they normally do HGV ) with no pedal after brake repairs and they had put a wrong calliper on it i.e. with the bleed nipple at the bottom

Must say we have done loads of these without issue so think you are unlucky to have a problem.

Cheers Aidan

Hi

Thank you for the reply guys

We have tried bleeding all the brakes several times.

This motor has had 2 new rear calipairs fitted recently by another garage ! They are fitted the correct way round and appear ok.

Have considered going down the route Aiden has suggested. But waiting to speak to the customer because as you can imagine what should have been a simple enough job has turned into a nightmare with the costs going above what was quoted !

Will get back to it next week and hopefully get to the bottom of it

would it be possible for you to have mistakenly crossed the pipes over ?.

Is the handbrake operated via the calipers on this one? If so are the lever arms fully on their stops.

Have you tried backing the cables right off to bleed, then road test to get pistons out fully, then re-adjust?

Just a thought, do the rear pads have  locating pins to line up with the piston cut outs? If so are they correctly aligned, this could also give these symptoms, as the piston/s could be pushing off square onto the pads (you get the idea).
