Hi guys,

Got a 52 reg clio TD in with problems...

The car will crank over no problem but wont fire, its does this every now and then but has recently got worse, the owner has tried new glow plugs, replaced earths to engine, had the immobilisor ecu tested and a visit to a dealer who replaced a few relays?? and pronounced it fine, I thinks its because it decided to start when they had the thing!

It spins over fast so starter and battery are fine, was thinking possible mechanical problem as it has done 150k miles......but when it does start it drives fine so????

any ideas?

Welcome to the forum.

When does it not start - hot or cold?

Has it recently had a new fuel filter and was it a genuine dealer's one?

First read the fault-codes and check the rail pressure when it's cranking but non-start.

Also check for the engine cranking-speed reading.

Crank position sensors and excessive injector leak-off could also be involved; but check those others first.

Thanks Angus,

Ok further checks with the owner revealed....

Problem occours hot or cold

Fuel pressure and injectors checked when it was at dealer ok

Fault codes read and cleared but no report as to what they where

New crank sensor fitted at dealer

More info gleaned just now,

The immobilisor ecu was checked as when the problem occours when the igntion key is turned the lights go out and the starter turns but if your slow turning the key the light comes back on and the starter stops so possible key and column ring issue, does the key need recoding?

Andy

Do I understand that correctly - the starter begins to crank the engine, then stops?

I'd also wonder about corroded fuses; deteriorated wiring looms; ignition switch; starter feed cable/earthing issues; dead cell in the battery; or even the starter itself.

You need to get this to do it and test to see what's really happening.  Not a nice job at all.

Use "Search" above to look for "Clio starter stops" as I've a feeling that we've had something similar on a Clio before.
