Stalling problems whilst coasting and at idle.

The symptoms at the being started with the revs dropping then rising again whilst idleing intermittantly(not hunting). Later on started to stall intermittantly.
Spoke to a few mechanics who advised cleaning the idle speed control valve, did so but to no avail. Changed so called idle speed valve- no different. Cleaned throttle housing and butterfly, changed throttle position sensor, still no change. Changed crank position sensor- no change. Checked leakage pass inlet manifold with caarb cleaner- no leakage but vehicle started to over rev when clutch was depressed. Garage want to change the ECU which shows signs of water damage due to age long waterleak. Reluctant to do so because of cost (approx 316.00+vat). Does anyone have any suggestions or have similar problems they have encountered. I would appreciate any comments you may have.  At wits end as what to do.   Help!!!!!!

Hi. Have you disconnected the battery after doing all this work, it needs this to reset the ecu back to base settings after correcting the fault.

SadThanks Tony for you advise, tried it but didn’t have any effect. Was there a specific length of time the terminals needed to be disconnected or was 20 seconds enough. Problem still exists! HELP!!!

Replaced the AirFlow (maph) sensor as a precaution but to no avail, engine still stalling on occation.
Disconnected battery for several minutes this time, no change here.
Ordering up a new ECU tomorrow from local dealer :’(.
HOPE THIS WORKS!!!

:’(Dealer fitted new ECU yesterday, what can I say!!!
Did not change a thing. This weekend shall attempt to change the crank case breather valve somebody mentioned could be the culprit. Let you know how this goes.

How old is the Fiesta ? 98 on - if so the ECU may need to be programmed to the car which meens driving it for up to 20 minutes, its no good letting it tick over, all the sensors then are re-set to the new ECU to their parameters. Are there any fault codes present in the ECU ?

:’(The fiesta is a 97 with an EEC V module. Dealer has informed me that all fault codes are reset and the module programmed in. I have however realised that the red LED in the clock now stays illuminated on start up and after a short while blinks twice, pauses blinks once then pauses again, so on and so forth and that the remote on the key doesn’t operate the central locking or deadlock system anymore (Batteries are not flat) what can this be and why is it happening.
This weekend just gone, spent some time looking around the engine bay to find the crank case breather valve, finally found it nested between the inlet manifold and cylinder head and closer inspection found out that the rubber hoses to it had collasped and split. Having these replaced as well as the breather valve. Will post the finding as and when I get some results.

SmileFinally good news all round. A mechanic said that the remote key fob had to be reprogrammed into the alarm control sensor probably due to new EEC module fitted. Did this and hey presto central locking A O K but red led still blinking. Dealer pretested the alarm system and contacts saying this would reset the system but problem still exists. At home fitted the new crankcase breather valve and rubber hoses which i’m please to say seems to have cured the ongoing stalling problem. Refitted the old EEC module back again which cured the blinking LED light with no adverse problems to the idle or running of the engine. Return new module back to Dealer who wanted to charge a handling fee after all that  :o. The split tube cost approx.5.00 whilst the cost of the EEC module over 300.00 plus V.A.T.   :Smile
