Does anyone have any ideas about my Granada. The immobiliser keeps cutting out and sometimes wont start... sometimes it does! I cant identify any one thing that effects it and is proving quite dangerous when it cuts out going 80mph on the A1! Any suggestions are welcome. Apparently, it would cost me over 500 quid at a ford dealer. Is this true? Cant I have it turned off or bypassed? Thanks
Andy (An increasingly annoyed Granada driver!)

Hi Andy, What makes you think that it is the immobiliser that is causing the problem.??. what type of immobiliser is fitted ??. is it a pats system with the red chip in the key, or is it the bosch one with the remote control,??. if it is bosch it can be removed, if its pats then i would doubt if it would cause the car to stop. you need to find out what is going wrong when it stops, i.e losing spark or fuel or injector pulse etc.

Hoorah... a response at last! A glimmer of hope maybe...?
You’re absolutely right... I may well have jumped to conclusions here but I think its the immobiliser because it doesnt always switch off properly when I try to deactivate it. Its a Bosch one by the way, with a remote control. Sometimes the car will start and then instantly cut out... othertimes it will struggle to start and others it’ll start and then as soon as I let thew revs settle, it’ll cut out (although I dont think this is immobiliser related). The revs drop to below 1000 and then back up to 1000 again... is this normal? Its an automatic by the way. >
My knowledge of cars is strictly limited (ie I know where to put fluids and I know where the engine is located!) and it is really frustrating me and becoming more and more dangerous for my wife and kids. Will moving the immobilser be cheap/easy/worth it or will I end up having to fork out for a Ford man to ’look at it’
Thanks for your help by the way... very much appreciated ;D

look inside the bosch immobiliser unit, there are two relays which are prone to dry solder joints on the back of the board, re solder them this will cure the problem. very common fault!

ok... soldering I can do... finding the unit, I cant :-[
Where am I actually looking? Or... how big is it... likely location? Like I said... my knowledge of a car engine is rather limited!
Thanks Andy

I think the immobiliser box could be in the centre of the dash, if it is, remove the radio and it will be behind steel plates on the left hand side, it is a sod to get out, and you may need some plasters when you have finished. but when you have got it out, have a look inside and either repair the soldered joints or remove it and bridge it out, if you get stuck i can let you know which terminals to bridge. P.s if it is faulty then the led could flash after starting the engine.
