Hi all,Had an interesting one in today,( as you do on a Saturday morning!), a 2001 ford ka 1.3, customer reports engine cutting out when you indicate left, or switch between full and dipped beam on the headlights. Try as i might i couldn't replicate the fault, no codes present, also removed the column cowl and checked wiring, as i thought it must be something loose on the back of the ign switch, but all is fine. Has anyone come across anything similar?? heres hoping... Bill.

I wonder if there's a common [loose?] earth shared by the ECU and the front lights?

If the engine is stalling when a lot of consumers are switched on, It is likley the ISCV is due for replacement. They usually start playing up at about 35-40k miles.Check the valve clearances in case you have any tight ones too.

hi all, thanks for the ideas,Got the car coming back in tomorrow, so will re-check earths etc. also spoke to customer today to get more info.. occasionally( 1 out of 3 times), when indicating left, the indicator flashes fast, the heater panel illumination goes out, then the engine stops. Does anyone have a wiring diagram showing common earth points, as autodata only has abs diags. thanks bill

hi all
Car back in today with a bit more history... Fault usually only occurs with radio on.. and is accompanied by a strong smell of burning plastic inside the car. Still can't replicate the fault in the workshop or on roadtest though. checked all eartrhs again... all ok.

Problem cured,It was a loose earth on the L/H rear lamp unit, and the smell was coming from an over-active flasher unit. Re-made earth, replaced flasher and all ok now. thanks again for the help. bill
