Hi everyone,

have you had a good Valentine day?

I fall out of love with a Focus that, after replacing the clutch, the "Carm unit" as they call it ( I call it slave cylinder) and the master cylinder (plastic one! what this world is going to!!), I cannot get pedal on the clutch. I bled it with pressure bleeder, I bled it with the old fashion Up/Down but no avail.

Any suggestion what to do to get pedal pressure?

This system needs to have the fluid drawn through it using a Vacuum pump , mityvac or similar, once the flow is created the unit more or less self bleeds

I bleed out a lot of american cars brake systems with the tandem master cylinders that are not horizontal (higher at the front) and awkward clutch systems that are similar to the focus.  The brakes need to be bench bled first, then either reverse fluid injected (RFi), or pressure bled.  I imported a tool caused a "phoenix injector", that injects fluid from the nipples back (as mentioned above).  Very effective device.

To bleed out the clutch, I pressure bled first, then held the pedal down to the floor, unbolted the slave so the bleed nipple was higher than the rest of the cylinder, cracked open the nipple, pushed the piston back by hand (got fluid all over me), then locked the nipple out while still holding back the piston.  Then released it, bolted it back, removed the pedal hold down tool, and it worked!!  These are renown for their awkwardness.

Hope this goes somewhere to helping you out.

Andy.

Progress is great don’t you think?

Old Marina's & Discovery's & many more had hydraulic clutch arrangements that were straightforward to bleed. These modern Ford & Vauxhalls seem to have lost the basic logic that the bleed point should be at a high point at the end of the range of flow.

Cyril will remember a Pug 505 I think that had a one way bleed arrangement that required a pressure bleed, from the nipple back up to the master cylinder.

Cheers!

"Old Marina's were easy to bleed..."

I once spent three whole days trying to get a pedal on a postman's 1.3 after doing the clutch.  I changed everything and bled it backwards, forwards - every which way: yet it still had absolutely no pressure at all.

It was only the old "pedal jammed down overnight" trick that finally worked.  Never did quite figure out why.

Motorbikes are the same, they can be ba**ards to bleed, have resorted to the old cable tie the lever back trick before myself
