got a fiesta 1.4 tdci 03 reg in 60000miles ,found vales to have been hitting the piston ,but the timing marks were spot on for the cam/crank pegs .is there a common fault that happens with these to cause valve damage ?not found cause yet ,wondered if i might be missing the fault ?
thanks in advance

Theorectically, if the engine oil is too thick, the hydraulic lifters can over expand and cause damage.

check camshafts as lobes are pressed on, was it brought to you after fault happened or other people had looked at it ?

car came in with engine knock at idle ,customer been told valves or something ,they wasn't sure by someone
angus no codes in vehicle
compresion test cyl 1 and 2 down the most ,checked timing ,pegs go in .not checked keyways yet
not seen vehicle before so have no history of repairs done to it ,but there was 2 bolts missing ,1 in egr pipe & other in manifold/rockercover and signs of someone been with a screwdriver chiseling around injector 2
think need to find out what work has been done to it ,but might not get very far Smile
was lookin at cam lobes but they appear ok at moment only had a general look ,is there a way to tell for slight movement of lobes they don't move by hand ?
thanks

Jim have you had the head removed and replaced the damaged valves when you say the compression is low is this with the new valves and timed - pinned up? if these engines have had valve to piston contact there is a possible chance the lobes have moved slightly i have seen them breaking t belt hitting valves and when you time them up they will only crank over by hand 50-180 degrees then valves will touch pistons as lobes move on shaft when valve damage occured . you will not move lobes by hand , if your tappets are ok as stated before and your compression is still low camshaft would be my next thing to check

i have removed the head ,its away at engine re-con shop at moment .
waiting to find out how many are bent -defently been hitting on cyl 1
spoke to customer and the only work been done is the injector seals ,but just get the feeling they are holding something back,
he had the injector seals done somewhere else ,and just leaves the car with no questions of price or time scale

jim make sure to check piston height at tdc on all cylinders. just incase they used a lot of wd 40 - thinners ect to free sticking injectors and maybe hydraulic ed when they went to start it its not nice getting other peoples work and customer not telling the full truth but it just makes the bill that little bit better when you sort it out, i take it there was no key ways damaged on crank or cam?

checked piston hight and bores not damaged ,had head back ,new valves on cyl 1 and guides .
fitted it with new hydrolic lifteers ,rockers and camshaft .
ran worse than before and no compression on cyl 1 .
head was removed again and no signs of damage -sent to re-conditioners again they found nothing wrong ,they have spoken to a local ford dealers and they appear to have one the same that they cannot find the cause
gonna have to remove piston

Cylinder leakage test first? Before head off time.
