Details of the Circuit

·         Using inputs of fuel level from the Fuel Level Sensor, the engine control module (ECM) calculates existing vapor pressures within the fuel system.

·         With varying fuel content vapor pressure shows a marked change.

·         To ensure proper functioning of evaporative emission (EVAP) system, it is imperative to calculate Vapor Pressure.

·         Fuel Level helps to gauge whether it is capable of detecting extremities of existing EVAP system faults accurately.

·         This Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) detects a stuck fuel level sender.

Pre-requisites of Setting the DTC

·   Fuel Level Sensor voltage < 0.05V.

·   Fuel Level Sensor circuit low voltage.

What happens when DTC sets?

When will DTC clear?

1) The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) will not glow

1) A history DTC will be removed after 40 successive warm-up cycles without any fault

2) The ECM will store the previously recorded conditions of the DTC as Failure Records data only.



2) DTC(s) can be cleared using the scan tool

3) This information will not be stored in the Freeze Frame data.




Diagnostic Tools Available

The following tasks must be undertaken as a precautionary measure:

  • Surveying harness connectors for:     a) backed-out terminal, b) inaccurate mating, c) broken locks d) improperly formed or tampered terminals, e unimpressive terminal-to-wire connection.
  • Inspecting the wiring harness for damage.
  • A stuck Fuel Level Sensor may cause the DTC to set. If DTC P0463 cannot be duplicated, the information included in the Freeze Frame data would be handy in calculating vehicle operating conditions of the initially set DTC.
  • Checking resistance for the Fuel Level Sensor.


               Resistance for the following conditions is as follows:

                            Empty = 100 ohms or over.

                            Half full = about 32.5 ohms.

                            Full = 10 ohms or less.

Carry out an EOBD System Check.

Follow "On-Board Diagnostic System Check"


1) Switch ON the ignition key.

2) Insert a scan tool.

3) Run the car within Freeze Frame conditions as observed

Is the DTC P0462 set?

Follow "Diagnostic Aids"


1)        Dissociate the fuel sender electrical connector from the fuel pump.

2)       Measure the voltage in the signal circuit at terminal 1 Using a digital voltmeter (DVM)

Note: The value over here ranges between 0.2-4.8V

Do you note that the voltage is within the given value?

Probe for a proper ground connection at the fuel tank and repair as necessary.

1) Detach the fuel sender from the fuel tank temporarily.

2) Reconnect the fuel sender electrical connector once more.

3)       Watch the Fuel Level Sensor parameter on the scan tool while removing the Fuel Level Sensor float from the empty position to the full position.

4)       Rerun the whole process several times.

Do you see the Fuel Level Sensor value on the scan tool rising and then dipping steadily when the float is moved?

Search for an open or short to ground in the Fuel Level Sensor circuit and mend accordingly.

Mend the open or short to ground in the Fuel Level Sensor circuit between the Fuel Level Sensor harness connector and the Fuel Level Sensor.

Replace the fuel sender assembly.

1)       Attach the fuel sender electrical connector.

2)       Dissociate the engine control module (ECM) connector.

3)       Measure the voltage in the signal circuit, at terminal 81 Using a digital voltmeter (DVM).

Note: The value over here ranges between 0.2-4.8V

Does the DVM read within the specified value?

Follow Step 10

Follow section 9E, Instrumentation/Driver Information


Replace the ECM.


Follow     Step 11



1)       Clear the DTCs using the scan tool.

2)       Switch on the engine and idle at normal operating temperature.

3)       Run the car within the conditions for setting the DTC as specified in the supporting text.

Does the scan tool indicate that this diagnostic has been run and the test passed?
