Abs pump module removal instruction for Volvo
The ABS pump and module (they are combined - here we will show you how to seperate them) are located
somewhat awkwardly on the later Volvo range.
Now you should disconnect the battery. I didn't and had no problems. If you choose not to, ensure the ignition
has been switched off for at least 30 mins.
Yep, that's it below the fuse box (brown brake pipe lines coming out of the ABS pump). I found the easiest
way to gain access was to remove the air filter box and move the intake air pipe out of the way. Next unclip
the fusebox and position this out of the way.
There are two connectors you need to disconnect. The first is the data connector (pictured above). There is
a clip holding it on (by the persons thumb) which you need to unclip. The black top part will then lift up and
prise the whole connector off. Second is the pump power plug (two wire plug). Pinch the two sides of this
plug and 'wiggle' out gently. The next step is a lot harder...
The module is held on the pump by 4 torx E-5 bolts (a 4mm socket will also work, however make sure the
4mm socket is squarely on to prevent rounding of the bolt). The bolt locations are as pictured above by the
red arrows. You will need a small rachet to reach under. It is crucial to ensure the socket bit is squarely on
the bolt to prevent rounding the bolt head. The bottom two bolts are very awkward to get to. You could loosen
the supporting pump bracket to gain better access to them.
Once these are loosened, the module will drop down off the valves. These are sealed so no fluid escapes. All
the module does is open and close the valves with the solenoids (round blue solenoids pictured below). Be
careful to catch the module and pull up out the engine bay. All the solenoids are securely held in place, so
nothing is going to fall out, get lost etc.
The exposed side of the ABS pump is pictured below. You can see the sealed valves sticking out. If
you will be driving the car, you may wish to cover these. Wrap and tape tightly with a bag or similar
to keep dry and free of dirt.
Congratulations. You now have your ABS control module in your hand.
Refitting is a reversal. Again, ensure the socket is squarely on the bolt to prevent rounding the bolt head.
